What is the difference between Bespoke Handmade Jewellery and Mass Produced Pieces?

Most jewellery buyers are unaware of the difference between bespoke handmade jewellery created by a talented artisan and a machine-made piece of jewellery.

Fine jewellery crafted with care and traditional techniques creates a true sense of personalisation and offers a higher level of quality.

The exceptional quality of bespoke jewellery is completely absent in jewellery created as part of an identical group of items made in a large volume.  An assembly line of specialised machinery delivering routine designs is not an appealing idea when you think about your engagement ring, is it?

The uninspired repetition of designs in mass produced jewellery

The finest things in life are rare. Just like the name suggests, handmade jewellery is all about crafting the piece entirely by hand, every step of the way. Most of the jewellery displayed across malls, retail chains and department stores is cast jewellery. Thousands of the same or highly similar designs are created with this industrial process of ‘casting’.

Casting is the process of creating a design blueprint with the help of a CAD programme. The final design  becomes numerous same or similar versions as a dummy resin or wax model with the help of 3D printing technology. The design is standardised in multiple sizes and similarly calibrated gemstones are set in the designs. In many cases, the jewellery casting process is outsourced to emerging nations.

Casting is an efficient and cost effective method when it comes to producing jewellery at volume. This economical, fast, and flawless process developed to meet the rapidly growing demand of the jewellery industry. The need to manufacture innumerable pieces compromises the dual qualities of individuality and creativity. For many it also feels like a process altogether devoid of any emotion.

Some of the big names in the jewellery industry have gradually resorted to the cost-effective technique of casting. However, the quality factor is different between various brands from the mass market retail jewellery chains.

How is handmade fine jewellery different?

For a start, skilled artisans focus on one specific piece of jewellery for days or even weeks to fashion something outstanding that will stand the test of time. Secondly, the general level of materials’ quality is also more premium and specific to a particular unique design. Bespoke jewellery pieces can be designed around a unique gemstone, rather than just slotting any stone into an existing design.

The customer consistently engages with the artisan to develop a bespoke jewellery piece where you decide every part of the design. And the best part is the final reveal when you get to see the finished product.

The careful consideration, ingeniousness of design, and a visibly compelling presentation add a sense of romance to the memorable journey of handcrafting a gorgeous piece of bespoke fine jewellery.
